Well a couple more bug reports came in - I’m going to have to bite the bullet and start tracking these things down. And while I’m at it I’ll start on the export and import. Probably just csv/tab delimited for now, but I’ll look into Keypad and Treenote also, see how involved they would be. I’ll aim for a new release in January sometime.
There are a couple of Rails and Subversion enabled webhosts that look promising - A Small Orange and OCS Solutions. So hopefully soon I’ll have this site on Rails, and the source code in Subversion, online.
Also just converted the old CVS repository to Subversion.
Update: I signed up with OCS Solutions, and am switching the site over to it.

Hi!
I really like the idea of using a document/database application and Neo appears quite slick and reliable, but (probably like many potential users) I need reliable export to know that I can share the content with others and protect my investment in using the application.
More than RTF, HTML would be useful because it’s web-ready (but I see from looking at a .neo file that RTF is the internal storage format for rich text).
I would suggest using XML as the native format and use XHTML for rich text. This would have the potential to become a standard for sharing “docu-bases”.

Chandler already supplies the cross-platform Python and GUI infrastructure that you need. I would suggest joining Chandler development, writing Chandler parcels, etc., rather than abby.

How has you experience been with OCS Solutions? I’m looking for the same thing, a host that supports Ruby/Rails and subversion. They look pretty good to me, but wanted to hear your opinion. Thanks.

Colm - thanks, export is on the way, most likely this month. And yes, I’d like to get away from rtf as well - I like the various wiki formatting codes much better. But ideally neomem would let the user choose the type of markup, because there are so many different ones out there now. And the backend should be able to give you your data in whatever format you want - XML, YAML, etc.

Dave N - yeah, I’ve been watching Chandler for a while, but I get the feeling it’s too complex for what I’d like to do. And Abby was sort of an experiment that will become neomemConsole, a semi-natural language interface on neomemData, all done in Ruby. I had worked with Python for a while, and heard about Ruby, but stuck with Python because I’d already bought a couple of books on it. But after seeing Ruby in action with Rails and working with it a bit I don’t think I could go back to Python!
Dave - so far I haven’t gotten the greatest support from OCS, but it was in the midst of the holidays when I was asking all these questions. I still haven’t gotten the site switched over yet - I was kind of confused as to whether the domain name switch would be automatic or not, but apparently it wasn’t, so I’ll have to dig into that. This is definitely not my area of expertise…
